HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. Apple adopted it in iOS 11 (2017) as the default photo format because it produces files roughly half the size of JPG at comparable quality, using the modern HEVC codec.
The trade-off: HEIC is not universally supported. Windows, older Android phones, web upload forms, email clients, and most CMSs cannot open or display HEIC files natively.
JPG (or JPEG) has been the standard photo format on the web since the mid-1990s. Every browser, operating system, image editor, and content management system supports it.
Converting HEIC to JPG ensures your iPhone photos can be opened anywhere — on a Windows PC, in Photoshop, on a forum, in a job application, or in an email attachment.
Most online HEIC converters upload your photos to their servers, process them, and send them back. That means strangers handle your private images, and you wait twice for upload and download.
Browser-based conversion eliminates both problems. Your photos stay on your device, and conversion starts the moment you drop the file.
heic.videoconverter.live is a free, browser-based tool for converting iPhone HEIC photos into standard JPG, PNG, and WebP formats.
When Apple adopted HEIC as the default format for iPhone photos in 2017, it created a compatibility gap. Millions of people every month need to send an iPhone photo to someone on Windows, upload it to an older website, or attach it to an email — and find that the recipient cannot open the file.
The existing solutions almost all work the same way: you upload your photo to a stranger's server, wait for their server to process it, and download the result. That approach has real downsides. Your private photos pass through a third party. You wait twice — once to upload, once to download. And most of those services are covered in banner ads or nag you to upgrade to "Pro."
This tool takes a different approach. Modern browsers can decode HEIC files directly using WebAssembly. That means conversion can happen on your own device, instantly, without any server involvement. No uploads. No accounts. No ads. Just a simple tool that does one thing well.
heic.videoconverter.live uses libheif, an open-source HEIC/HEIF decoding library, compiled to WebAssembly. When you drop a file into the converter, your browser loads this library and uses your device's own CPU to decode the image. The result is then re-encoded as JPG, PNG, or WebP using your browser's built-in Canvas API.
At no point does your image data leave your device. You can verify this yourself by opening your browser's developer tools, switching to the Network tab, and watching during a conversion. You will see no image data transmitted.
heic.videoconverter.live is an independent project built by a solo developer. It is not affiliated with Apple Inc. or any other image-conversion service. The tool is provided free of charge as a utility to people who need quick, private HEIC conversion.
